Interior Styling

Working for an interior designer has its perks. Getting to tag along to some awe inspiring locations and houses is one of them but another is collecting a plethora of tips, insider tricks and sneaky little do’s and don’ts for creating amazing spaces. When styling a house, at first you might think it’s a little unnecessary to add so many little details and things. After all, everyone loves to look at magazine pictures of houses and assumes they would never be able to achieve that put together styled look in their own house because they need their house to be functional, not just pretty with a lot of stuff. But it actually is very easily achieved and will change the way you feel about your space. After all, it's all about the details. I came across this great article from Apartment Therapy about interior styling and thought it was pretty great. Apartment Therapy: Stylist Tricks

Here are a few tips that I have compiled that anyone can do to create a pretty picture out of an already functional space.
1. Group things in odd numbers. Candles, figurines, picture frames, etc. always look better in groups of 3, 5 or even 7.
2. When you have a large amount of small things you want to display, place them in a tray so it gives it the illusion of a cleaner look.
3. Layer.  Textures, colors, pillows…anything you want. It creates depth which adds livable luxury.
4. Edit. If something does not have a purpose, don’t use it.
5. Always use what you already have in your house. Repurpose a cute mug into a paperclip dish. Use a small wine rack as a rolled-up towel holder in your bathroom. Make your space using your things.
6. Add life. Flowers, plants, succulents. It adds warmth.

Here’s another link to a great interview of photostylist/producer Annette Joseph where she talks about how to breathe life into a room and style it beautifully for a photo or for real life.Interview--Lessons of a Home Photo Stylist
